under the Calvary
Veľké Úľany, district Galanta, SR
The concept aims to conserve and highlight the authentic genius loci of the site. The form originates in traditional morphology and it is embedded amidst trees. Efforts towards a symbiotic entity with nature led to a combination of flat and gabled roof. The two-storey building deliberately respects the street line and its location opens up a view of the entire area. The steeper slope of the roof to the south promotes the lightness and subtlety of the garden and creates a nice background. Human scale brings airiness into the backyard and decreases towards the entrance, which subsequently seems less personal, but still attractive.
The shape of the house is based on features of a rural house with a gabled roof. The project is conceived to offer a view on the nearby Calvary and at the same time, it provides adequate links between interior and exterior by generous glazing. The building ia anchored on a reinforced concrete foundation slab which protects the root system under the house, so that the site retains its original green areas. In both interior and exterior, exclusively natural materialsare used, such as wood, stone, steel, and concrete in its rough form. The building emanates lightness and airiness and uplifts a certain genius loci of the area.
